Don't Turn Around - Michelle Gagnon
I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

Brief summary: Two hackers, one a boy who has lead a privileged life and the other a girl running from the foster care system, stumble upon a medical conspiracy and fight to protect themselves and expose the corrupt company involved.

Thoughts: I enjoyed this book I thought it was well paced and interesting. It didn't feel dumbed down (which can happen when an author switches from adult books to YA) and the dialogue seemed realistic. I know very little about computers so I can not speak about the accuracy of the hacks but they seemed plausible and the explanations were short and kept my attention. The parts that were suppose to be sad didn't really make me feel for the characters- I think there was more action and suspense in this book then emotion. I did like the ending- I like that the book didn't just leave you in the middle of a sentence or action sequence although it did leave you in the middle of a mini-climax which is, I assume, meant to set up the next book.

All in all I would recommend this book and I will probably pick up the next one.

The Enemy (The Enemy #1) - Charlie Higson
The Enemy is about a group of children (ages 16 and under) who are the only survivors of a terrible disease that has turned the adults into decaying, cannibalistic monsters. They are making a journey from their home (at a supermarket) to Buckingham Palace where, there are told, there are other, better organized, kids. The journey is dangerous and the destination uncertain. Will they be able to overcome the obstacles and stick together.

I really liked this book I felt like the story kept moving and there wasn't any drag in the story because the third person perspective was always changing- going from character to character. The characters were well written and relateable- they were tough but vulnerable, most of them fighting for their spot in their large blended family.

The grown-ups are gross and scary- just the way monsters should be- they are stupid but evolving, becoming more dangerous as time goes on.

Another plus for me was the ending- mainly that it had one- some books with sequels just end without warning midsentence, midthough mid-whatever. There is room for more story and of course I want to know what happens to the kids next but this part of the story is over. I plan on reading the rest of the book in this series.

A Little Friendly Advice - Siobhan Vivian
This book is about a girl named Ruby who has to deal with a changing dynamic among her group of friends, her fathers reappearance (during her 16th birthday party) after a 6 year absence, and her first love.. all in one week. All of this forces her to deal with her problems and take control (and responsibility) for her own life.
From the synopsis on the back of the book you would think this was a book about best-friends letting a boy ruin their friendship - but you would be wrong. There is a lot more going on and this small book had quite a story to it.
I found Ruby (as the main character, and the narrator) to be very relatable. She is really struggling with her parents and getting the answers she wants and needs. I felt that her friends were very well written characters and I liked that even people with the best intentions can really mess up and betray you, it can change your relationship but it doesn't have to end it.

I would recommend this book to someone looking for a book that deals with friends, family (especially divorce and problems with friends) and growing up.

The Breakup Bible - Melissa Kantor
This book is about a girl named Jennifer Lewis who seems to be having an amazing junior year, she has two great friends, a spot as an editor at her school's newspaper, and an amazing boyfriend (good looking, valedictorian, and the editor-in-chief). He life seems to come to a screeching halt however when Max, her boyfriend, breaks up with her after five months of, seemingly, blissful courtship. Jen doesn't know what she is going to do. What did she do wrong? How will she ever be able to go to school? The idea of never kissing Max again makes her cry. Thus begins the months long journey from heartbreak to happiness.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cast of characters from Jens wannabe gangster brother to her always optimistic best friend Martha. I felt that Jen's reaction was dramatic, understandable, and realistic. The writing is funny and thoughtful and I enjoyed Jen's relationship with her friends. Clara wants her to be strong and move on (Jen wishes she would shut up) and Martha is certain that Max will want Jen back (which is all Jen wants to hear)

I spent most of this book waiting for Jen to stop being sad and get angry but the wait was well worth it. Healing can not be rushed and sometimes, even when you think you are healed, old wounds can open up. This is a story about overcoming obstacles and learning how to take risks again.

I also recommend Melissa Kantor's book If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?

The Big Over Easy - Jasper Fforde
This book was a lot of fun- I loved all of the references and the stories woven into the mystery. Jack Spratt is a great character and so is Mary Mary (although it took me a while to warm up to her).Things are a bit different in their world but I felt that it was explained in a neat and fluid manner. I loved (or hated really but in a good way... the way you are suppose to hate a villain) Friedland Chymes- He was very interesting. Overall I would recommend this book, the characters are great (so is the story) and the story sped up towards the end and finished very well.

Around the World in Eighty Days - Jules Verne
I read this book awhile ago so this review is not going to go into to much detail about what I liked and what I didn't like. However there is nothing about this book that I remember disliking.

I loved it. I stayed up all night reading it- it helped that I have never seen any of the movies or met anyone else that has read this book (OK I don't actually know if that is true I guess some of my teachers had probably read this book but I haven't spoken about this book with anyone else who read it.) and, because of that, I had no idea what was going to happen in the end or even during the book. I thought it was all very entertaining- it was one of the first classics I read without being told to.

When I finished it I said to myself, "Wow that was a good book." I love reading but that doesn't happen often for me (I can only think of two other books that have had that effect on me).

I recommend this book to everyone but especially people who like adventure stories or classics.

Looks - Madeleine George
I am not sure what made me dislike this book so much.

There were aspects of it that I did like. The descriptions and I felt that the author did a good job making me feel sick to my stomach when something awful happened to one of the characters but in the end I felt more depressed than any other emotion. I don't think I actually got anything from the book but a gloomy headache. Which I guess is good because a book is not supposed to make me feel comfortable with eating disorders I should not be comfortable with people bulling other people and people putting themselves down but I can't really bring myself to recommend the book to anyone (I did recommend it to one person and they had the same reaction I did so...)

Made me think but I didn't like it.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows
I don't have much to say about the book- I just finished it so I am still absorbing but I do know that I loved it. Within the first few pages I knew I was going to enjoy it and, even when the stories were sad, I was still aware of how much I was enjoying the book. I loved the characters and the the way the story unfolded. I would recommend this book to most people (I would say everyone but I know that not all books are for everyone). When I was ten pages from the end I began to read much slower, even though I wanted to know what was going to happen, because my time with the characters was limited. I may how more to say about the book later but for know just: I loved it.
